Awareness Through Movement® consists of verbally directed movement sequences. A lesson generally lasts from thirty to sixty minutes. Each lesson is usually organized around a particular function. Several hundred hours of Awareness Through Movement lessons exist, each providing an opportunity to explore how we move habitually, and what else is possible.
In Awareness Through Movement® (ATM) lessons students are verbally guided through a sequence of pleasant, purposeful movements. ATM’s are usually presented in a group setting, though the experience is primarily individual and personal.
ATM lessons are taught in a non-judgmental atmosphere, respecting your body’s limits while at the same time introducing unfamiliar movement patterns. They provide an opportunity for you to discover more natural, comfortable movement and develop a clearer image of yourself.

The results can be extraordinary. No experience is needed; you go at your own pace with support from the teacher. It is often best to explore the movements with closed eyes unless otherwise instructed, as this can increase your internal awareness by as much as 40%.
Unlike traditional exercise, where the objective is to burn calories, stretch or build muscle tissue, Awareness Through Movement® lessons teach you how to reduce unnecessary muscular effort and improve your awareness of the whole self in action. By moving slowly and paying attention, the nervous system discovers new possibilities and lets go of less functional habits or patterns. This results in more efficient movement, a feeling of lightness, reduction in aches and pains, and an increased sense of self-awareness.
"The aim of the Feldenkrais Method is a person that is organized to move with minimum effort and maximum efficiency, not through muscular strength, but through increased consciousness of how movement works." ~ Moshe Feldenkrais, PhD |
This video demonstrates how Awareness Through Movement® lessons are quiet explorations similar to babies learning about their own movements and what is possible. It is part of a project being undertaken by a woman named Irene Lyon who is working on videotaping the learning of movement in an individual over a 25 year life span.
